Michael Collins was born in 1890 in Sam’s Cross, Clonakilty, County Cork. He grew up on a farm, moved to London as a teenager, and returned to Ireland to fight for independence. He took part in the Easter Rising of 1916 and was interned in Wales. On his release, he rose quickly: organising intelligence, directing guerrilla campaigns, and leading Ireland’s fight for freedom. Collins helped negotiate the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921 and became Chairman of the Provisional Government in 1922.
